Bicycle Safety Tips
You may have heard the number one rule in bicycle safety is to wear a helmet. This may help you reduce the seriousness of head injuries and brain injuries if you do get hit by a car. But it is important to remember that wearing a helmet does nothing to avoid getting hit by a car, truck, motorcycle, or another bicycle. Wearing a helmet simply will not prevent a bicycle accident. The following are some general bicycle safety tips:
- Put a bell or horn on your bike. In some other countries, this is a law. Use this to signal other drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians of your presence.
- Ride on the right side of the road: You should travel the same direction with the flow of automobile traffic.
- Avoid “the door zone:” If a parked car to your right were to suddenly open a door, you could be seriously injured or killed in a collision with the door. Ride far enough to the left of parked cars so you cannot be injured by a door swinging open.
- Do not wear headphones: If a car is honking or somebody is calling out a warning, you want to be able to hear it.
- Take extra precautions when riding at night. Wear a reflector vest and consider adding additional reflectors to your bicycle.
- Obey bicycle safety laws. Stop at stop signs, stop lights and know how to signal properly.
- Make eye contact with drivers. If you cannot make eye contact, slow down enough so that you can stop if you need to.
- Do not ride a bicycle in stormy weather: If it is raining, consider alternate transportation.
