Los Angeles Metrolink Accident Attorneys

Chatsworth Metrolink Accident Lawyers

Los Angeles experienced a devastating tragedy on September 12, 2008 when a northbound double deck Metrolink commuter train collided with a southbound Union Pacific freight train.  The accident happened at 4:23 p.m., PDT, on the Ventura County Line.  At least 25 people died and more than 100 people were taken to the hospital for serious injuries. Because many people were critically injured, the death toll could rise.

The September 12, 2008 California train accident resulted in a derailment of both the Metrolink train and the Union Pacific Freight train.  222 people were aboard Metrolink commuter train 111. The train was an Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) F59PH series locomotive pulling three Bombardier bi-level coach cars. The accident was the deadliest accident in Metrolink’s history, and third accident involving fatalities since Metrolink began service in 1991.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the accident.  Human error is likely the blame, however the NTSB is predicting the investigation surrounding the cause of the Chatsworth derailment accident could take months. Metrolink initially commented on the cause of the accident, however, the NTSB characterized those comments to be premature and ordered Metrolink to not comment further.

With high gas prices and increased traffic congestion in America’s largest city, a growing number of Los Angeles residents have been commuting to work and college campuses using the Metrolink system. Metrolink has been operated by Veolia Transport since July 2005.  It was previously operated by Amtrak. Metrolink services seven lines covering 55 stations and more than 388 route miles.  Average daily ridership is more than 40,000 people.

All cases at Estey & Bomberger, LLP are handled on a contingency fee basis. There are upfront retainer fees. If we do not win your case, you will not be charged for costs or services. Because Metrolink may be a public agency the time in which to bring a claim may be much shorter (e.g. 6 months) and any person injured in the collision must file a claim to preserve their rights.  If a claim is not timely filed then a person may lose his/her right to compensation so please call us immediately regarding your case.
